Co-Founder & App Development Leader (All Platforms) at Scribl.com (Scribliotech, Inc.) (Hanover, NH) (allows remote)

Join us and become a part of history as together we change the face of e-commerce for digital content and preserve the ability of authors to earn a living by writing. We are looking for a smart, creative cross-platform app-development wizard to provide apps for reading ebooks and listening to audiobooks that run on all major platforms (iOS, Windows, Android, Mac OS). This role will complement the rest of the founding team who has already built the back-end infrastructure and first beta version of the website. As we prepare to come out of beta, we also need the right developer to build apps to deliver an amazing user experience in parallel.

Highlights

  • Get in on the ground floor and become an owner of a new, industry-transforming company.

  • Consult with former kayak.com founding employee & Chief Architect Bill O'Donnell, who is a technical advisor to the company.

  • Create your own solutions to challenging technical problems.

  • Choose the tools that will be used by you and your colleagues.

  • Make mistakes, disrupt the status quo, and help us create the engineering culture that you would like!

  • Build your own dream job.

If hired, you will receive a hefty equity grant relative to the position. You will also earn direct cash compensation in the form of a revenue share on every dollar from the app you build plus the existing site, and across our 1,000+ distribution partners. Your pay will increase as our gross revenue increases, until those rev-share pay levels reach your target salary.

We are located in the growing Lebanon/Hanover, NH tech region around Dartmouth and the Lebanon airport, but during our launch phase, we expect candidates to work from home, wherever that may be. We will pay for relocation, should that become necessary in the future.

Skills & Requirements

NOTE: Your cover letter matters to us, maybe more than your resume! We want to know why you are interested in Scribl. Please read this section and write it accordingly.

We want you if you are:

  • Fun, kind, fast, and flexible

  • A good communicator

  • Passionate about digital content, especially ebooks and audiobooks

And have development experience with:

  • Xamarin or React Native for cross-platform app development on the following platforms:

    • iOS

    • Windows UWP (Windows 10, Xbox, Phone, Holographic, etc.)

    • Android (including Kindle)

    • Mac OS (optional)

  • In-App Purchases

  • EPUB reader

  • MP3 player for both local files and streaming

  • User account security and data encryption

  • HTML5 and JavaScript

  • Connecting to a PostgreSQL database and S3 to access content

  • E-commerce and security best practices

If you have some experience with these, that's a plus, but it's not required:

  • Ruby-on-Rails (to cross support our web developers)

  • E-commerce and security best practices

  • AWS hosting and management

  • NGINX and Ubuntu sysadmin

  • Audio processing or speech recognition programming

  • Game programming

  • Strong team-building and project management record

  • Leadership

You will be responsible to:

  • Work on your own and with other developers developing mobile apps to accompany our ebook and audiobook store

  • Build tight integration between the apps and our backend database so the user experience is preserved whether accessing on a web browser from a desktop or form your app

  • Nurture a healthy engineering culture

It is important that you either have or are willing to gain an appreciation for digital content creators -- authors and artists. Our success is dependent on our ability to help them prosper and want that perspective to be shared by everyone on our team. Please describe your interest in Scribl, CrowdPricing, ebooks, or authors in your cover letter. The resume should show you have the skills. Senior Full Stack Developer (React/Node.js) - We bring nature indoors at Bloomon (Amsterdam, Netherlands) (allows remote)

For this job you can either relocate to Amsterdam or work remotely.

Our working methodology is as disruptive as our stack and infrastructure. We are working towards a Squad model founded by spotify, where you work in a small multi-disciplinary team. In addition, we use tools such as Slack, Jira, Github, and Trello to communicate efficiently and asynchronously -- this allows us to work with anyone, anywhere. We work from hubs spread out between Europe and Asia. And it works great! After setting priorities, tasks enter a kanban (much like a living sprint), where developers set their own ETA which they themselves can monitor using time tracking. This way all our developers know exactly what to do, when and how. Next to that, this approach allows us to hire amazing developers from around the world, without having to compromise based on their location.

We work with the latest technologies, which allows for rapid development. Think about React.js , Redux, Webpack,Material UI, Node.js, Hapi, Kubernetes, RabbitMQ, etc.. We would love it if you already have a lot of experience in React.js and Redux. If you say you are very experienced with another high-level JavaScript framework such as Vue.js, Angular.js, or Ember.js – we would still be very happy. You do need to have a great understanding of Javascript, e.g. how scopes work and why we don’t like side effects. Everything you do will be in consideration of fundamental principles such as testability, readability, and separation of concerns.

What do we expect from you?

  • 6 months experience with React.js and redux; or very experienced with a high-level Javascript framework such as Vue.js, Angular.js, or Ember.js

  • 2+ years Javascript (ES6), webpack, and Node.js

  • Great understanding on how to structure maintainable large-scale frontend and backend applications; e.g. how to separate concerns (business logic vs UI vs state)

  • Experience with Node.js frameworks such as HAPI, Restify, Express, Loopback, etc.

  • Experience working with, or great understanding of, micro-services and/or cloud functions

  • Unit, integration, and end-to-end testing

  • SQL

Bonus (not necessary):

  • Laravel / PHP

  • Experience with gRPC, Kafka, RabbitMQ

  • CI/CD (Kubernetes, Jenkins, TravisCI, Docker)

  • Experience with side effect management libraries

  • Grid layouts based on e.g. react-flexbox-grid or Bootstrap

Data Engineer for the Dutch vanguard of creativity and craftsmanship at Bloomon (Amsterdam, Netherlands) (allows remote)

As a Data engineer you are in a unique position of enabling the entire company to make insightful, data-driven decisions. Thanks to your ETL infrastructure, pipelines that write data from any input to a centralized data warehouse can easily be developed and maintained. This data is then used to create analysis by your fellow colleagues in the business intelligence team. Next to that you would be responsible for identifying, designing, and implementing internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.

We support our software developers, data analysts and data scientists on data initiatives aiming to ensure consistent optimal data delivery architecture throughout bloomon's ongoing projects. We are a team of self-directed data lovers and  are proud of being able to support the data needs of multiple teams, systems and products within all five countries bloomon operates. Our team constantly looks into opportunities for optimizing or even re-designing our company’s data architecture to support our next generation of products and data initiatives. Best part of it for you - joining us would mean that you will be playing the main role into deciding on the data architecture.

What do we expect from you?

  • Experience with any framework for data processing workflows

  • Experience visualizing and documenting architectures, e.g. a flow diagram describing how data flows from an input to ETL pipelines to a data warehouse

  • Experience with Google Dataflow or other cloud data processing services (e.g. on AWS)

  • 3+ years experience with SQL and Python

  • Experience with unit and behavioral testing

  • Great understanding of CI/CD flows, containerization, and related best practices

  • Understanding of horizontal scalability and throughput of databases

  • Proactive and “can-do” mentality

Bonuses but not required:

  • Expereince with Node.js

  • Experience with BI visualization tools such as Superset

  • Experience with micro-services and kubernetes
